On a flat roof, the drainage system is engineered. There’s tapered insulation to create slope where the structure has none, crickets to direct water toward collection points, and often a combination of gutters, scuppers, and interior drains working together. When something fails, it’s rarely just the gutter. And a contractor who only looks at the gutter is going to miss the real problem.
There are three main ways flat roofs drain: gutters attached at the roof edge, interior drains that run through the building, and scuppers — openings cut through the parapet wall that let water flow off the roof surface. Many flat roofs use a combination of these, and each one has its own failure points.
Interior drains are effective and protected from freezing, but they require clear strainers and regular inspection of the pipes running through the building. If the pipe is partially blocked, water backs up on the roof surface long before it ever reaches the gutter. Scuppers are low-maintenance and affordable, but they depend on the roof having enough pitch to actually move water toward the opening — and if the tapered insulation has settled or degraded, that pitch may no longer exist.
Most well-designed flat roofs also include overflow scuppers, placed about two inches above the primary drainage point. These act as a backup if the main drain clogs — water rises to that level and exits before it can reach a depth that damages the structure.
